🛡️ Team Drills: Defense

These drills help kids learn how to defend as a team—delaying attackers, communicating, and guiding the ball away from danger. Each one includes a video so you can see it in action.

1. 1v1 Defending – Delay & Don’t Dive

Teaches how to slow down attackers and stay balanced without diving in.

Coaching Focus:

  • Stay low and patient
  • Force the attacker wide
  • Time the tackle carefully

2. 2v2 Pressure–Cover Drill

Defensive teamwork—one player pressures, the other provides cover.

Coaching Focus:

  • Communication (“Pressure!” / “Cover!”)
  • Support positioning
  • Don’t both chase the ball

3. Channeling / Angling Drill

Helps defenders learn to steer attackers away from the goal.

Coaching Focus:

  • Guide attacker toward the sideline
  • Stay between them and the goal
  • Use body positioning instead of lunging

4. Defensive Footwork & Timing

Builds solid footwork and movement fundamentals for defense.

Coaching Focus:

  • Quick side steps
  • Stay on your toes
  • Don’t overcommit

5. 4 Goal Game – Small-Sided Defending

Fun game that encourages team shape, spacing, and communication.

Coaching Focus:

  • Stay organized defensively
  • Close passing lanes
  • Talk constantly as a team

🧠 Coaching Tips for Defense

  • Teach the 4 D’s: Delay → Deny → Deflect → Dispossess
  • Use clear, simple cues: “Force wide,” “Talk early,” “Don’t dive in”
  • Rotate defenders so everyone learns both pressure and cover
  • Praise effort and smart positioning, not just tackles
